History

The Naparima Girls’ High School (NGHS) Alumnae Association is the sole representative body in Trinidad and Tobago of the past students of Naparima Girls’ High School. The Association first met in 1935, when then Principal, Miss Grace Beattie, needed to raise funds to assist in the expansion and development of the school.

The first Executive comprised of:

  • President – Miss Grace Beattie
  • Vice President – Miss Phoebe Lahouri
  • Secretary – Mrs. Laura Matadeen
  • Treasurer – Miss Celestina Lucky
  • Ordinary Members – Mrs. K. Mahase, Miss H. Samuel, Mrs. D Tahir, Miss. W Samlalsingh, Miss. Doris Fitzpatrick

This group of ladies was also responsible for drawing up the first constitution of the Association. It is noteworthy that the successive revisions of the Constitution continue to embrace the principles set out in 1935. By 1942 the Association was actively involved in raising funds for the erection of the Science Building and the Auditorium

In fact, from 1945 to the early 1960’s the Alumnae Association Annual Bazaar was the highlight of school events as well as for the town of San Fernando.

In the mid 1960’s the Bazaar was taken over by the school but the Alumnae Association continued to be involved in the organizing of the Tea Stall.

Today, nearly 80 years later, the Alumnae Association is refitting itself to deal with 21st. century ideas and methods. Internet technology and Social Media will spread the work of the Association and bind the graduates closer together in honouring our Alma Mater.
